"marshknute" (marshknute)

I spent the day roaming around NYC because I hate being warm and dry. So here’s what the city looks like during an epic blizzard:
NYC officially issued a travel ban at 2:30pm, which banned all vehicles except for emergency vehicles.
A nearly deserted Park Ave South. I took this about 10 minutes before the travel ban. At this point, there were only a few errant cars scrambling to get to their destinations.
Blizzard of the Century. Still wearing shorts. Not a single fuck was given that day! None.
I’m not sure who to feel bad for; the poor bastard who has to excavate his car tomorrow morning, or the guy who had to clear the sidewalk all day long.
The abandoned streets are just eerie.
Grand Central Station weathering the storm.
For serious, this is 42nd street outside Grand Central, and save for a few police cars in the distance, the streets are deserted. Creepy!
New York Public Library.
Lion turned Snow Leopard.
A view through the treetops. You can barely make out the enormous buildings just a block away.
Unfortunately, this little shop in Bryant Park was closed, so no hot chocolate for me. :(
Despite the storm, Times Square was still PACKED.
And the blinding billboards were the only thing capable of cutting through the dense storm!
The NYPD lined up and at the ready. Those guys didn’t get a spare moment all day.
Then there’s this poor bastard who got stuck. Fortunately, a nice group of British tourists helped him break free! I did my part shortly after, helping to push a Crown Vic taxi free!
Finally made it to Columbus Circle and the start of Central Park!
Dog sledding: you’re doing it wrong.
These children invented the coolest sledding concept I’ve ever seen: if you make it to the bottom, you fly through a cloud of fleeing birds! It’s like confetti!
Tons of people taking shelter from the snow and wind beneath the Bethesda Arcade.
Then there’s these guys who converted the staircase of Bethesda Terrace into a terrain park!
While their friends take shelter beneath Bethesda Fountain!
Even the statues are bundled up in a blanket trying to stay warm!
The Dairy/Visitors’ Center is one of the coolest things in Central Park.
That crowd at the end is feeding the birds.
These are birds.
Probably my favorite photo. It’s a Prius in case you were wondering.
The Central Park Zoo, and an ironic sign advertising their new movie Ice Age 4D!
See that cave? See that Sea Lion in the middle? He loves the snow! Probably.
And by this point, the streets are just enormous sidewalks. The only vehicles still driving around are emergency vehicles.
This is Fifth Ave, completely deserted of cars.
A HUGE gust of wind blew in and pretty much turned the Apple Store invisible.
And one parting shot of the NY Public Library as the sun goes down (at 4pm, because whiteout blizzard).

Now THIS is what you’re supposed to do when your city gets shut down by a blizzard.

That doesn’t look half bad. Pleasant even as long as the power stays on. I know it willbsuck in two days time, but enjoyable now!

That’s legit, you are going on a couple of feet. That would even be a pain in ass for Montana.

Wow! I didn’t venture much away from major roads (Park, 5th, and Broadway), so it’s awesome to see how badly the quieter streets got buried.

My street wasn't plowed until 6pm this evening. I witnessed an ambulance, a plow and at least 5 cars get stuck outside my building

Thank you so much. I was working in Jersey City on Thursday and was planning on staying the weekend to check out the snow in NYC. Once I saw what was due to happen, I bolted for Florida Friday morning. I didn't want to be stuck until Tuesday. I’m sorry I missed it but great pix, browsing in front of the fireplace as its 40something in Cocoa Beach.

Thanks, I really enjoyed reading this.
I’ve been to Manhattan a few times and I’ve seen most of this but not with the blizzard desertion. When getting back to your hotel at 1:00 AM there are still plenty of cars and pedestrians. I can’t imagine standing in the middle of 5th ave taking a picture.

You got some really nice shots. I particularly like the ones through the trees in central park. I’ve always found it very amusing how the birds in NY are so gangster. I’ve seen pigeons eating in the middle of the street not even bother to fly away when cars come. They just kept eating as the cars drove over them, straddling them of course.
